Dest is very popular at Barcelona and has taken advantage of an injury to Sergi Roberto to show Ronald Koeman that he should be first choice in this position. Having started just two of a possible seven league matches after joining on October 1, it has been in the Champions League that the 20-year-old has been able to display his talent, although he found himself on the bench away to Juventus.
For the first time in a long time, Barcelona feel good about their right-back. They believe that Dest is the long-term solution in this position, with his performance away to Dynamo Kiev in midweek highlighting his ability. The United States international scored a goal but he was fast, daring and caused all sorts of problems down Dynamo's left-hand side. It was an Alves-esque performance.
Right-Backs signed in recent years by Barcelona
- Douglas Pereira (2014/2015): six million euros
- Aleix Vidal (2015/2016) 22 million euros
- Nelson Semedo (2017/2018): 35 million euros
- Sergino Dest (2020/2021): 21 million euros plus five in add-ons
Before Dest's arrival, there have been some questionable arrivals at right-back. Douglas was a disaster, Aleix Vidal never got going, and Nelson Semedo showed promise but never made the step up that many hoped he would. Barcelona hoped they would find their Alves replacement with one of these three players but, ultimately, Sergi Roberto would end up playing there.
Now, 89 million euros later, Barcelona seem to have found a right-back that has Barcelona DNA. Four years later, the memory of Alves seems less painful. Sergino Dest is here to stay.
